January Reboot

January Reboot

TIP OF THE MONTH

www.

January is a great time to reboot! Having said that, rebooting of course varies from person to person. For one it may be on a physical level. Here we can think about caring for our body, exercise, eating well, sleeping well. . .etcetera. . .

For the next it may symbolise our emotional body. I always remember hearing the analogy for this body as energy in motion. Our memories are stored in this layer of ourselves, we make stories here too, so it’s a nice time to reboot and be aware of the stories that we are telling ourselves. . .and to transform them into the stories that serve us best.

For yet another it may be on a mental level. Are there any courses and workshops that we want to attend? Hint, if creativity is on your list. . .the monthly painting workshop starts on January 23rd from 18:30-21:30 at Atelier Molenpad in Amsterdam.

Then of course we have our spiritual body. What is a way that you choose to uplift your spirits? This is again so much up to our individually and based on what will nurture our spirits most. My go to here is often along the lines of meditation, long walks in nature and being in the now. Even making time for volunteering can bring just this nourishment. . .

End of the day what we often crave is a balance between all four bodies, layers of ourselves. When we pay attention to where we are right now, we automatically get a chance to reboot. From this place we can focus again on adding or removing behaviours for ourself that will give us the balance that we personally crave on the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual bodies.

So I think that you can see my thoughts about a nice January reboot. It’s a way to let go of complications and choose what you would like this year to bring. When we start with a blank canvas, we can fill it with colors that we wish to experience this year. I personally like to think of these three bodies (physical, emotional, mental and spiritual) to be sure that I am filling up the canvas in such a way that will nurture my self throughout the year.

This is a great personal exercise as it is for your team at work. A great way to do such an exercise is at the studio, Atelier Molenpad. Here I offer these type of team building sessions. Have your team discover more about each other through painting abstract self portraits. Have you team collaborate on a painting together to reveal information that relates not only to their interaction, but also to how they can serve their customer better!

OUR TIP THIS MONTH:

My tip this month is create a painting based on 4 levels: Body, emotional, mental, spiritual.

  1. Instinctually select an art material (acrylic, watercolour, colored pencils, crayons) For each of the 4 levels
  2. Fill the complete page intuitively with these materials.
  3. Take a step back to see your painting and see if you want to add or take away something.
  4. When you feel that it is complete, prop your painting up and observe it in a non judgemental way.
  5. Take note of what you notice.
  6. Create a story that serves you! Have fun with this storytelling. It’s fun to play further with verbal and written storytelling based on your painting!

December Snow White Canvas

TIP OF THE MONTH

It’s Snow White outside! At least here in Amsterdam it is. Soooooo. . .knowing me well by now, you know how I love to feel into the metaphors. . .of everything. Snow white paint, priming your canvas, frosted blankets, creating a fresh new start, upgrade from the past…

What a great feeling it is to walk around town in this snow. I am moved by the quietness that it brings. Traffic slows down, leaving the crunchy and echoing sound of footsteps as I walk around. . . and as my furry hoodie wraps around my face, I become conscious of my own breath. Along with this rhythm, I hear the wind dusting all around with a fresh layer of white frozen powder.

What fond, happy memories this brings. . . frolicking in the snow, sliding, throwing snowballs. Carving my name in the snow, building a snowman and lying down on my back creating angels. It’s all fun and games for me. The temperature plays little roll as the fun warms up my spirits. . . to the max!

Bringing this snow white back into the metaphor of painting reminds me of a magical technique called glazing. In this technique, we create a transparent layer of white paint over our painting in order to create the visual effect that it has been sent to the background. This happens because we are in fact reducing the contrast in the colors.  A busy painting suddenly feels calm, just as walking walking in the snow does for me. See the exercise in the tip of the month below to try this out for yourself.

Another thought that I wanted to share is one of gifts that keep on giving, revealing and sharing. Yes, I am speaking of drawings and paintings. I am admiring the art hanging on my walls, both at home and in the studio. Over the years, these have been the most precious, personal gifts. In particular, I have a painting at home that my mother created in the 60’s. I am admiring the juicy colors, shapes, composition and thickness of paint.

This painting has such a strong feeling of presence and juicy alertness. Though my mother’s cognitive awareness has changed, she loves to continue to create through her passion of drawing and painting daily. It is wonderful to witness how her artistic passion flows ever passionately. How precious to have this painting. Art does indeed talk, share and inspire in a timeless fashion. The emotions that are conveyed in paintings can continually reveal itself over time. They don’t need words to express.

December is also the month to offer gifts of gratitude and love to our dear family and friends. How about creating art as a gift to yourself, or to give. It’s such the perfect opportunity express and share your emotions that can be enjoyed for the years to come. Where to start? How about gifting your loved the inspiration to create with. . .think about art supplies. . .crayons. . .paints. . . an inspirational book! You can also think about enrolling yourself of a dear one into a workshop, a course, a retreat. You are a creative being and will discover the perfect way to express for you!

Whatever you decide, DO IT NOW! December is the perfect month to set up 2018 to be the creation of your dreams, desires, friendships and expression!

Wishing you a snow white December full of gifts . . .and all goodness for 2018!

——-

OUR TIP THIS MONTH:

My tip this month is to glaze your canvas. Huh? What’s glazing a canvas? It means putting a thin layer of color (I use mostly white) over your whole or part of your painting in order to create uniformity, focus or adjust the overal brightness as part of its effect. This effect also creates a feeling of layers, as the painting gets sent to the background, (aerial perspective) leaving inspiration for something in the foreground.

  1. This exercise can best be done with acrylic paints. You can start with a white paint, say titanium, and dilute it with water say 60%.
  2. Now grab a dry, unfinished painting of yours. You know that one that you have been debating on whether you should toss it and have been keeping it to do something with. . .one day.
  3. Paint over the entire painting with this 60% glaze.
  4. After you have covered it with the white have a look and see what is happening. Continue with your painting as new inspirations streams in.
  5. In the case that there is a particular area in the painting that you would like to create focus to, wipe the glazing away in that area to allow the contrast to shine and draw attention.
  6. Continue to play with glazing and wiping away, and also try to work with varying gradations of the glaze, like 40%, 20% and so forth.

1) Art Installation: Stay tuned for the next installation location! And if you know of a great location for this installation, please reach out to me! More info and pictures at: https://www.daniellarubinovitz.com/artist/throughrosecoloredglasses/ .

November Rainbows

TIP OF THE MONTH

This month I have been pondering about rainbows. Amidst the combination of rain that we have had in bucketloads over here in Amsterdam and the sunshine peering through, it’s been a time to witness these magical moments. No doubt about the quote: “Life is like a rainbow. You need both the sun and the rain to make its colors appear.”

The colorful rainbow ark is like a present that we receive after the rain has passed. Makes me think of the mystique and symbolisms that are held within the rainbow. Though each culture has its own meaning, I love the metaphoric idea that it is like a path. . .a road that we can follow to our own symbolic pot of gold. It’s about our dreams coming true and being in that place of magical flow.

When I look at a rainbow, and recently we have had plenty to admire, it is the quality of the atmospheric colors that activates my heart, my soul and connection to this magical light. Like an opening of hope and energy. . .the feeling of pure love.

Rainbows are made up of 7 colors: Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. Not surprisingly that this build up matches the same color order as our bodies chakras and the standard color wheel that we would use for painting.

In writing this newsletter, I am reminded by how I used to often like to use the rainbow as a starting point to painting. I liked to, and will again use it as a first step activation of all the colors, especially if its been a while since creating with paints. . .colors. When we start with a rainbow, it’s also a good moment to get a baseline feeling of where we are in the present moment of time. Our needs and desire show themselves with such a painting. Think about intensities, proportion and placement of each of the colors depicted. Definitely give the tip of the month a go to experience this for yourself!

The celebration of all the colors in the rainbow puts me at awe, in the mode of gratefulness. Colors, rich as they are, have unique magical qualities and meaning that we can translate as metaphors in our life. What a perfect month to be celebrating this orchestra of colors. We already see this in nature through the foliage, pumpkins and rainbows.

It is no surprise that Thanksgiving lands right in the middle of this month. Thanksgiving is a holiday to celebrate exactly this. To celebrate what we are each immensely thankful for. Here we can take a conscious moment with friends and family and share those colourful items in our life.

Wishing you a magical November. . .

OUR TIP THIS MONTH:

My tip this month is to create your own rainbow.

  1. This exercise can best be done with watercolours, pastels, or wax crayons!
  2. Go ahead and draw a rainbow on a sheet of paper, you choose the scale that is most convenient.
  3. Pay particular attention to how the colors transition from one to the next.
  4. Go ahead and hang up the painting in front of you so that you can simply observe it.
  5. What do you notice about the colors intensity, overlap, proportion.
  6. Take notes to yourself and play with metaphors of these observations with areas in your life. “Life is like a rainbow. You need both the sun and the rain to make its colors appear.”

October Leaves

TIP OF THE MONTH

Wowzers, October is here, the leaves are starting to turn and blow along the streets as if a fully orchestrated dance. October also means that it’s a great time to share that I have been brewing another little being inside, yes, I am expecting again and feeling great! So grateful for this opportunity once more!

Having said that, I am just now starting a maternity leave and so the monthly club will continue again in January. Like the bears, I will be burrowing in a warm cozy cocoon for a bit. Sign ups for January are starting now however, so do let me know that you will be joining us!

Along with the adult monthly groups, I will be starting monthly pop up classes for kids. I was inspired to do so, as I see how much Noah loves to immerse himself in the paints. . . .and the studio is the perfect place to do so! There will also be pop up workshops for adults, of which dates will be announced!

La Vie En Rose will be a bit longer at Paleis Soestdijk and then is looking for new placement, local and international alike. Do let me know if you have a contact person with a public space.

Now back to the leaves, let’s experience the amazing shapes of nature by using the leaves as a template for a fun exercise. The exercise is shown in the video and the exercise is explained in the tip of the month below. . .First thing to do is to gather a couple of leaves in your coat and bring them home. It’s also such a fun exercise to do on a rainy day, so be prepared with your materials, then call your family and friends to join in! You can watch the video above, or read the tips of this month below.

Wishing you a smooth October. . .

OUR TIP THIS MONTH:

My tip this month is to create with the falling leaves.

  1. Collect a handful of leaves, fun to have different shapes, though you can do this exercise with just one leaf as well!
  2. Gather some art materials. . .one of these. . .or all: . . .pastels. . .charcoal. . .watercolors, acrylics. . .paper
  3. Start with placing one leaf on the paper and arbitrarily add the art material over the leaf.
  4. Now support the leaf with one hand so that it doesn’t move and rub the pigment over the leaf with your other hand. . .or brush. . .onto the paper below.
  5. When you lift the leaf, you should see the shape of the leaf on the paper.
  6. Continue with the same, or new leaf in another area of the paper. Allow the images to overlap, creating layers.

September Senses

TIP OF THE MONTH

September is the perfect time to activate our 5 senses in order to make even the most mondain tasks exhilerating. Why is this? Simple, when we activate the core senses: Smelling, Taste, Seeing, Touch, Hearing we are in the moment truly feeling, truly being in our experience. I prefer to reconnect to these core senses, knowing that our 6th sense of extrasensory perception is available for us.

And it’s so simple! We get to experience and appreciate what comes in through our senses in such an abundant way. Our senses are like a super highway into our emotions, memories, feelings. They are meaningful.

On my way to the studio, I often stop and literally smell the roses along the side of the canal. I smell the sweet happiness, smooth love that they exude. This act of stopping and smelling brings me into the here and now. The fragrance of this rose is all that there is. As a rose offers nourishment to more of my senses, with my eyes I observe the pink to creme blend of colors. With my hands I can caress the pedals and feel the soft velvety texture. Experiencing the world physically through my senses, I have come to realise, is tough to match through printed or digital images on the screen.

Looking a bit further in, we can appreciate how the senses have helped us survive in the natural world. Each of the senses is governed by a physical organ, body part that is specialised in that sense. Wow, pretty amazing huh! Just to peek your own curiosity again and remember these body parts I have created a short summary.

We smell primarily with our nose. We can discern between fragrances, fruits, citrus, woody, chemical, sweet and minty basic smells.

We taste primarily with our tongue, which can discern between sweet, salty, sour and bitter.

We see primarily through our eyes. Here we can discern light and dark, the essence of seeing, though we can break this down into lines, colors and shapes.

We touch primarily through our skin and mostly we reach out to touch something through our hands and fingers. Not only can our skin discern textures, we can also sense temperature, sharp, soft, rough and stickiness.

We listen primarily through our ears. Our ears allow us to discern details of sound, such as melody, harmony, rhythm, and dynamics.

So it’s quite amazing that we have these specialised body parts, organs to help us hone in on the senses. Such a rich awareness that is accessible to us. Sometimes I feel that it is easy to take this gift for granted. Yes, we use our senses often in a subconscious way. It keeps us safe, helps us make decisions that we are not even aware of.

So isn’t it nice to take a moment and consciously be present to these senses. They bring us home! I feel such an imense gratitude to be able to experience in this way. We can open up our hearts, as our chakras are activated literally one sense at a time. Here we can let go of thinking, primarily from our left hemisphere, of doing, of routines. Yes in this simple appreciation, we take a moment. . .or two. . .to reconnect.

Enjoy this month!

OUR TIP THIS MONTH:

My tip this month is to activate your senses through this short meditation.

  1. Start your journey with a beverage in a cup. Water, tea, coffee, juice, soft drink will do. Take at least 5 minutes for this exercise.
  2. We will experience this beverage, one sense at a time. Takes notes of your observations.
  3. Close your eyes and take in a couple of deep breaths in with your nose of your beverage. Next, continue with your eyes closed and taste the fluid, roll the fluid over different parts of your tongue.
  4. Still with your eyes closed, reach into the cup with your fingers and touch the fluid. What do you notice about temperature and consistency?
  5. With your eyes open now, observe the beverage with your eyes and ears. What do you see and what sounds do you hear.
  6. Now close your eyes again and let this experience linger on for another moment. When you open your eyes again, choose 3 keywords to complete this experience for yourself and write them somewhere visible for yourself today.

1) Paleis Soestdijk Art Installation: Come to Paleis Soestdijk until December 20th. Don’t forget to #daniellarubinovitz & #lavieenrose your social media shots so I can see you in action. August: Disconnect to Reconnect . . .

TIP OF THE MONTH

August can be the perfect time to disconnect to reconnect, especially when you are living in the northern hemisphere and enjoying the core of summertime!

I mostly go to Greece during this time of the year, and with off the chart temperatures, we run for the waters! So what a better opportunity to emerge myself into this element. I personally love the feeling of floating and experiencing the feeling of weightlessness. This refreshing feeling is one of boundary-less freedom and play. Experiencing continuous flow and transformative qualities at my fingertips exudes the feeling of possibilities. In the water, I feel little resistance and my body can move in every which direction that it chooses. Forget about boundaries when working with this element of water.

This sense of disconnection of structure, without boundaries, creates a feeling of freedom. It allows us to let go. It allows us to explore unrestricted movement and inner feelings. Afterwards, we get to reconnect to that relaxed inner us. This is exactly why I use the wet on wet technique in the studio. For those of you who aren’t familiar with this technique: It’s about totally immersing the paper before painting on it with a wet medium.  Most paints and mediums can be used on this wet paper. I like to use water color, tempera, ink or acrylic paint. Just as with swimming, this same feeling of non-resist, of freedom, of non-judgemental, of feelings from deep within can be easily released. Our inner world is there to explore.

See the fun tip below. Add an extra bucket of water to your creation and see what happens. Just explore. . . water is that refreshing element that knows no boundaries.

Enjoy this month!

OUR TIP THIS MONTH:

My tip this month is to play with water in your drawing and painting.

  1. Grab your sketchbook, or sheet of paper. The thicker the paper the more that the water will absorb in it, though this works fine with 80 gram. The paper just becomes a bit more delicate. Remember when you let it dry at end, the paper becomes firm once again.
  2. After you have immersed your paper in water, you can play with dropping, spraying and drawing with paint on it. . .ink is also fun it is so diluted that it streams with the water on the paper, often creating nerve like lines. See how the paint becomes boundary-less as it meanders along.
  3. Follow what happens. See how the colors start to blend. See how they flow over each-other. Discover how the paint finds its own patterns! Fun huh!
  4. Now that you have read through this. . .just do it. . .set aside at least 30 min of non-interrupted play time.

1) Paleis Soestdijk Art Installation: Come to Paleis Soestdijk until December 20th. Don’t forget to #daniellarubinovitz & #lavieenrose your social media shots so I can see you in action. This is where my family is from and I have gotten to know the gorgeous spots over the years. Date: 20-26 May, 2018 (please inquire). Info is being updated on site.

The week retreat in Amsterdam will be on 9-13 July 2018. http://www.ateliermolenpad.com/painting-retreat-week-amsterdam/

July: Holiday Notebook . . .

TIP OF THE MONTH

Before you are off on your holidays, pack any form of notebook/ sketchbook!

Yes, really do. I happen to like the simple lined notebooks that are definitely not designed for painting and such! What I like about them is the fact that they are light and flexible to carry around. I can write in them, paint, draw, collage and not worry about its preciousness.

See the fun tip below. See what happens when you mix oil crayons and watercolours. It’s like magic. . .inspirational and motivational! It’s also way fun, while travelling to use local art supplies, mud, pigments, local papers and such!

Enjoy this month!

OUR TIP THIS MONTH:

My tip this month is to play with mixing different art materials.

  1. Grab your sketchbook and doodle with oil pastels.
  2. Now paint over these doodles with watercolour in a complementary color (blue / orange, yellow / purple, red / green)
  3. Pretty fun huh! Keep going!

June: Royal June . . .

TIP OF THE MONTH

Royal June, we bow to you!

Summertime! Here in Amsterdam, we just passed a bit of a heatwave. Though, as I sit here writing you this note, this wave has passed on. . . Rain or shine however, I am exploring what it means to feel ROYAL!

This topic is inspired, as my art installation, La Vie En Rose is installed front and center at Paleis Soestdijk. This is the former palace of the Dutch Royal Family. Queen Juliana lived here with her family for over 6 decades. Now it’s open to the public as a museum to tour the palace and stroll around the abundant grounds. It’s a fun get away for the day, especially as they offer family events throughout the season. This weekend was an art, jazz and wine event, and as you can see in my video above, the girls in their cute royal dresses are running through and climbing the installation.

Having said that, it’s fun seeing my installation have a life of its own, travel and able to interact with the public. And indeed, it has been a hit with public interaction! Keukenhof was a setting which attracted international visitors (1 million visitors in 2 months), while Paleis Soestdijk, attracts an abundance national visitors.

So back to royalty! What makes something royal, and what makes June a royal month?

Well, observing the energy of this place, I get the feeling of space, tidiness, aesthetics, taken care of, spaciousness grounds, nature oasis, politeness, feeling of respect, dignity, historical, a general sense of clarity. Yes, these are the first things that come to mind in a royal setting.

This is what feels so royal about June as well! Warmer weather gives us space to be outside and explore our parks, beaches and open waters. All of a sudden the city opens up to an abundance of grounds to explore. Summer holidays, when we can, give us time and space to travel, to take time off, do what we like.

It’s the perfect setting to go out with our sketchbook. To be out in nature and frolic around. We get to be leisurely with our time. We may choose to pamper ourselves and know that we so very much deserve it! Rough doodles in our sketchbooks allow us to get out of our thinking and instead witness and explore deeper feelings. . .or not. So this feeling of clarity and abundance gives a good start of what we might discover about the royalties of June.

Even when we don’t travel and we apply learnings of royalty, the general feeling of space and tidiness is top of my list in creating that feeling of abundance. I have been playing with creating a renewed space,  in the studio. I have already done a huge cleanup and discarded items that were accumulated over the years. What a renewed energy that is buzzing here. Uncluttered space gives me the feeling of luxury, dignity of possibilities. Its again taking that time that we deserve to take, pause and reset.

As you read this, what ideas pop into your mind of a Royal June?

May: Holiday Plans

TIP OF THE MONTH

It’s

Aaaah May! A fun time to plan the holidays!

It’s the time that I ask myself: What do I desire for my next holidays? Sketching, biking, painting, walking, hiking, swimming, sculpting, writing, dancing, singing, socialising, solitude, culture, health, education, adventure?

As I live in the city, my choice is often has to do with nature. This year this choice applies once again. A place abundant with the elements of earth, water, warmth and air. I want to be outdoors and in contact with nature. I want to feel a gentle breeze on my cheeks. Hiking with my dearest ones. Sketching under the shade of a tree. Long distance swimming in the ocean. Drifting on floats. Lots of stracciatella ice-cream. Meaningful conversations. Pampering massages. Rest. Me time. Entertainment. Yoga. Pinacolada.

What would be your dreamtime spent this time round?

April: La Vie En Rose . . .

TIP OF THE MONTH

It’s April Folks!

Time for spring cleaning on all levels. Metaphors here include cleaning our lenses and transforming them into positive perspectives. Seeing the glass as half full!

This is the idea behind my art installation, Through Rose Colored Glasses / La Vie En Rose (yes, double titles). We can, from time to time, be influenced into seeing things from a perspective that is not in our highest and best good. Why would we do this? Convention? Fear?

As a matter of fact, I bet that we could make a career out of watching what meanings and opinions could be made to just about anything. Yes, it would be fair to say that we, as humans, are meaning making machines. Mmmmm so if that’s true, then we could choose to make meanings that benefit us vs. meanings that don’t . . .still with me?

Yes, we could look from a ‘la vie en rose’ perspective. This quote from Audrey Hepburn says it all: “La Vie En Rose. It is the French way of saying, ‘I am looking at the world through rose-colored glasses'”.  We could look at the positive side of things and accentuate them.

In writing this column, I am reminded how much we are influenced through these frames, these boundaries that we look through . . . often more than we care to share. The great thing to celebrate in being aware that most of us have free choice on choosing our own perspective on things. This hasn’t always been the case, and unfortunately for many in particular situations still don’t feel that it’s possible or safe to do. Sometimes this is true and sometimes it’s a belief that needs to be changed!

Celebrate that you can. I do. . .so much. . .that I made this huge steel art installation to spread this message. Choosing our own perspective is a birthright that should be honored and acknowledged. We all have our unique needs, wants and life purpose.

This is what I love about the world of coaching. It allows us to try on different glasses to see through. To update our beliefs on what we think is possible. We get to see and believe new possibilities for ourselves. Then. . .we get to go for it. Then. . .we get to go for it. . . .and zoom. . .constructive action with the right intention can manifest at a fast pace! Just like my belief of creating such a sculpture to spread my message in a public place, like Keukenhof, Tulip Park (That gets 1 million international visitors within 2 months). There are to, speak conservatively 500,000 selfies being sent around the world with this message now. . .yes, I am proud!

It has also been made possible when I personally updated my perspective of getting back into large art installations.

Go ahead and check out these glasses at Keukenhof before May 21st! Rain or shine, Keukenhof is a beautiful, place to be. . .that is ever changing! Fyi: they planted 3 layers of bulbs, so that the park changes throughout the season. I have been waiting for the tulips just in front of La Vie En Rose to bloom. . .and this is happening any day now!

Pleeeeaaaaassse don’t forget to #daniellarubinovitz your social media shots so that I can see you in action.
