BIG ART

TIP OF THE MONTH

Riding my bike in the park is such a wonderland of color these days. I get to experience yellows, oranges, reds and browns along with the greens. Such a gift marking the official change of seasons. Welcome Autumn! (at least in the northern hemisphere).

In its becoming of Autumn, nature feels like a gigantic expressive art piece in the making. It’s a massive scale performance as these leaves dance around, as they are guided by the wind. This feels to me like the biggest transformative art around.

This week I went to visit the BIG ART expo, here in Amsterdam. Though the work wasn’t quite as large as nature’s transformative art, it was quite inspiring. And so I thought this would be fun to share with you.

The show takes place in old bullet factory, which is compromised out of several gigantic factory buildings. The art is mostly conceptual. I found it inspiring to see how varying materials were used in varying scales and compositions. It was equally inspiring to see how vulnerable the art was. Much of the art was created with materials that one would think were for temporary display, like a gigantic mural made out of cheesecloth drawn by hand with a pencil.

I especially loved to play in the room where the walls and floor were compromised through charcoal and ink drawing on white paper. It reminded me of the worlds that are build through art. I feel that often art isn’t given enough space to experience it as a world. Each art piece depicts its own world, its own feeling and messages. . .and yes, art is indeed a metaphor for ourselves as individuals, living in our unique worlds.

So, if we could fill our walls with a continuous art piece, it would be easier to appreciate an environment, like a virtual reality tour. What would your world look like? What colors, lines, forms would exist in your world? Curious? Try it out!

Needless to say, I wish you a fun month to experience nature as a full immersive experience happening right now in all the parks around. . .Dont forget to pick up some leaves on the way and bring it home for the monthly tip.

OUR EXERCISE THIS MONTH:

Create something right with the leaves around . . .

  1. Watch the video above . . . for inspiration.
  2. Gather all sorts of leaves.
  3. Let them dry overnight flat in newspapers and a heavy flat weight on top.
  4. Paint around the leaves right on to the paper and take some away again.
  5. On some others, paint right on top of the leaves.
  6. Go ahead and glue some of the leaves on the paper.
  7. Keep doing this back and forth.
  8. Rotate the paper everyone and then to change perspective
  9. Let it be when it feels done.
  10. Where could you share it to inspire others?
  11. Like to share a picture? Post your art and findings instagram @daniellarubinovitz  & @ateliermolenpad. . .or Contact me for more on this topic.
