February PLAY

TIP OF THE MONTH

February stands for PLAY, in my cards at least!

Yes, my sculpture installation is being installed next week! Not that its fully done yet. . .its at that 80% marker! So still dotting the i’s and crossing the t’s. Exciting though! These 5 full scale figures are in development as I have been painting them this week. It’s a joy to paint in 3D like this.

I am loving the sculpture materials of cardboard, epoxy resin and fiberglass to build up anything and then painting in. I choose theme material primarily to crate a lightweight piece that would be easy to interact with. To me this piece is secretly a test pilot for a steel version that I would like to make and have been on the hunt for a suitable outdoor location for it. . . In the meantime, I have been creating meaning of interaction and process of creating these 5 pieces in different scales.

A bit more about the interaction concept here is that art is often untouchable. But this is a piece you’re asked to move and make your own. Made of rotatable parts, participants can express their vision and share it with others on social media. They influence the meaning of this installation. By interacting they explore the physical and emotional aspect of PLAY.

“It’s about touching the art and having influence on the image. This uses your autonomy; you make the decision about what the image will say. You have permission to express what you see and make it real and then share it with others.”

This project consists of 5 human scale figures that have moveable limbs and heads. The concept is that people can physically create new scenes and share them with others. This is done on their own and/or in collaboration with others. This installation is primarily made out of fortified cardboard.

The sculpture will be available for 2 months at NDSM Fuse Gallery. 13 February- 5 April. Official opening is on 20 February.

From 14 April – 30 April it will be exhibited in an outdoor courtyard at Molenpad 15-17.  Official opening will be on 16th of April, 2020.

Play is supported by the AFK (Amsterdam Fund for the Arts)
