More Clay This May . . .

TIP OF THE MONTH

Zoom zoom zoom and more virtual happenings. It’s nice to add mega physical nature to the mix. This month again an art suggestion in the form of clay has risen in me. This time with a mega amount of clay. More physical clay, as in the amount of clay where it seems impossible to lift. Working with large amounts feels gratifying and empowering. In this process our hands connect with the feeling in the air to aid in forming the clay.

Again, check out video above to see what I mean. It is once again about the process, the road, rather than the destination. It is about transformation, about letting go from a certain outcome, letting go of a certain form, letting go of the obvious, letting go of the looking good. Instead it is about moving with the impulses that our hand feels. Tuning into the energy in the air, our own rhythm, feeling. I close my eyes to tune in and let my hands guide the form.

We can start by building up a mountain of clay at the base from a simple point. This point can be seen as a seed, perhaps a wish that we would like to make. We can then build up, up, up. After our base tower is built up we can start to slowly allow our hands to form the piece. We do this by moving bits, squeezing, taking away, adding more. It’s layers and layers of drawings over each other. Each layer covers the first and is influenced by the layer below. Curious? Scroll down to try the exercise this month.

Now, two more things: Like my video above? Please click at the bottom right icon (coincidently with my picture on it) to subscribe to my youtube channel.

Wanna know what’s happening with Flying fish? It is fabricated! It is now at the powdercoater for a clear finish. More info about my art and process is always on my instagram account @daniellarubinovitz. Flying Fish will be installed in the Price Sculpture Forest on Whidbey Island in Washington State.

In case you missed it. .. at the studio I am offering Zoom pop up painting classes for individual (pop up) and Zoom team building workshops for companies. I am looking forward to the regulations to be lifted so that we can hold these workshops once again inperson.

Let’s stay in contact about how we might collaborate together in workshops and art installations.

OUR EXERCISE THIS MONTH:

Dig in and create with mega amounts of clay. . .

  1. Check out video above.
  2. Grab a mega amount of clay . . .I know this can be tricky at home perhaps go out to nature to find some river clay. .. or mud. . .
  3. Start with transforming the mass of clay into small bun sized bits of clay/ mud.
  4. Place a small (coin size) bit of clay on ground/ table as bottom center of your piece.
  5. Build up around this seed, by adding generous bits of clay with your eyes closed until you have built up a large tower, that reaches about heart level.
  6. Then take a step back and observe with your eyes open.
  7. Look at it through a new lens. .. for instance: the relation between the inner and outer form? or perhaps the directional force that the forms are taking?
  8. Keep going with your eyes closed. Feel free to transform it by taking away or adding more clay.
  9. When you are done, what do you notice? What does it remind you of? What else?
  10. Like to share a picture? Post your art and findings instagram @daniellarubinovitz  & @ateliermolenpad. . .or Contact me for more on this topic.
