May: My Space . . .

TIP OF THE MONTH

Here we are in May! It’s so weird that time. . .nature just goes on and on. . .when it seems like the rest of the world (as we know it) has been on pause. . .

In Amsterdam we never had a true lockdown in comparison to our neighboring countries. I fell blessed about this that we were able to take responsibility in taking care and such. I felt that people were quite respectful in giving space, in this case 1.5 meters.

My space is the title of this newsletter as the idea of space during Covid days is an interesting one. It’s a two fold story. On one side, we are talking about keeping distance and therefore maintaining the space between us. On the flip side is having your own space when you are in lockdown with your whole family.. . .or in being on Zoom and online in overload and loosing out of the non-digital space. Here I am referring to the personal space to just be.

Lastly or maybe firstly, what about creative space, space to create and more importantly to display your creations? Oh yeah!

So what am I up to these days in the studio? Besides applying for the sculpture submissions, I have been completing my grant with the AFK (Amsterdam Fund for the Arts) on my PLAY project. Because of Covid, I removed them from NDSM Fuse Gallery and brought them to the studio in order to create the online PLAY SERIES. Here I am invites collaborators to come either live in the studio, or to collaborate online through voice overs.

Now. . .today I though it would be fun to make this painting, where I go over layer after layer. you can see how each time I simply allow new images to show up, and then release them again. This is such a freeing way to paint. Its totally judgement free and way fun. . .actually yI could go on and on and on because it is created from my gut. The forms that come up naturally occur and reseed into the next layer.
