May we participate? Yes Please!

07 May in Journal

this is the month of remembrance as it is of celebration. To remember those who left us untimely during the wars, who suffered before and beyond. To honor them. It's also the month where we celebrate and honor mothers. . .our mothers and the mother figure. Love, nurturing and committed. So it's like the circle of life, the fall and the rising up. May feels indeed like the transition month between Spring and Summer. This time of spring buzz buzz of excitement while waking up (metaphorically speaking) and then getting ready for settling down and relaxing with easy breeze of summer (at least in the Northern Hemisphere)....

April Tip: Adhere Painting . . .

11 April in Journal

TIP OF THE MONTH Wozers! April! Cherry blossom time! Over here in Amsterdam, we have the Cherry blossom park which is in amazingly full bloom for some weeks a year. It's so rewarding to catch the right timing and be able to play among the trees. . . .and then back to the studio! So, I was recently asked during the monthly club about how to prepare these paintings for durability and easy to hang options. So I have created a brief overview of options. Note: I like to keep these videos short, less than 3 minutes. So if you feel that after watching this video to see a longer step by step explanation, please type in 'attach paper painting to canvas' on your search engine browser. Here are the basics. There are dry and wet adhesives. I like to use acrylic medium as a wet adhesive. Note: Spray adhesives work well too, just...

March Participation . . .

06 March in Journal

TIP OF THE MONTH Aah, March! The days are indeed getting longer, giving us more daylighttime. This invokes participation to me. Getting outside and connecting with nature, projects, friends. . .Hmmm wondering if the word March is somehow related to the idea of marching together. . .hmmm. . .just a side thought here. . . Back to the idea of participating. . .when we participate, we get to try out new colors, new techniques. We can learn from each other, collaborate. Share. We inspire each other. New thoughts. Let go of inhibitions, expect the unexpected, try new materials and such. Let me ask you directly, in what area of your life would you like to participate more? Or is it more that you would like to tone down your participation? Just like a painting. . .what do you want to add or take away! Yeah, painting is a metaphor for it all! So. . .dive...

February Feelings of the Elements . . .

13 February in Journal

TIP OF THE MONTH Aah, February! Month of inner warmth and LOVE. A bit more of this inner warmth nurturing during all this changing weather around us (in northern hemisphere at least) It's still cold, though the days are lighter longer. We get a glimpse of the seasons ahead. We get to wake up our vocabulary of emotions and feelings during this mix of frigid, wet days to bright, warm and sunny ones. It's a fun time to look at how coloris an expression of emotion.  How these emotions can blend in to each other. How these mixes bring  gorgeous mixes of secondary and tertiary shades. They remind me of the qualities of the basic elements. . .earth, water, fire, air. . .and how they blend in our physical bodies. . .bones, water, warmth, oxygenand are mirrored in our lives. Art easily allows us to connect with these elements firstly on a physical level as...

December Gifts . . .

05 December in Journal

TIP OF THE MONTH I'm eager to share inspiration for this month of December! Let's continue this conversation about Metaphors in Art. This is one of the ideas that I like to emphasize  using the SMART process too. This month we play with the concept of gifts. After I created, and observed this painting, I noticed things about gifts. It struck me how the magic of gifts are both in the giving and receiving. In the movement from inside to outside and from outside to inside. The graphic part of this painting reminded me of wrapping paper. It made me ponder about the excitement of gifts and that perhaps 50% of the gift experience is actually in the presentation of it. The wrapping. Whether this is in the form of ribbons or hand made wrapping paper. This lead me to the next stream of thought of a creative project. How fun is it...

November Abundance

06 November in Journal

TIP OF THE MONTH I'm eager to share inspiration for this month of November! Let's continue this conversation about Metaphors in Art. This is one of the ideas that I like to emphasize  using the SMART process too. This month we play with the concept of abundance. There is an abundance of physical materials. For instance paints, papers, charcoal, clay. . .or any materials that fit your creative needs. The idea is that when we know that there is an abundance, so no shortage of, we can let go of being stingy. Instead its a feeling of going for it. Permission to create! We can speak of an abundance, of time, space, permission and ideas. Allowing us to take in space, knowing there is enough to go around. Knowing that our own greatness inspires others to do the same.  The gesture of abundance feels to me as being two fold. On one side, it...

October Golden Nugget . . .

01 October in Journal

TIP OF THE MONTH I'm eager to once again share inspiration for this month of October! As you are probably quite aware that as part of painting using the SMART painting process, we receive Golden Nuggets. You see, painting is a metaphor. . .and within these metaphors, we receive golden nuggets. These nuggets provide us inspiration, insight and goals. They warm our heart, make us stop in our tracks and bring on reflection to topics for discussion.  This month, we cherish the golden nugget of taking space. In painting this translates as filling the canvas. This topic is two fold. On one side it's about using the whole canvas. In painting, the canvas is our world, so the point is to connect with our whole canvas. Connect with the space that we are given, and go beyond. Dare to take in the space, express yourself. On the other side, go past the boundaries of the canvas....
